Our upcoming Pro Session this Monday at 12PM is accompanied by an incisive, guest post about the artist statement—what is is, when it's used, and how to write yours. The post is packed with steps and tips that will help you revise a stale statement or write a fresh one.
Reflect, Refocus, Renew: Goal-Setting to Keep Going
Isabella's insight that your statement is an extension of your art is timely advice. Especially in today's environment, prospective collectors, boards, and clients generally, engage a world of media about you and your work before they even get to a single piece.
It's frustrating, yes. But it's never been more important to have solid messaging that you're confident represents you in that pile of grant applications (hundreds? thousands?) or in the network of artists on social media (millions? billions?)
Among her tips, a favorite is "Don’t dumb it down, but DO use language that most people can grasp without a PhD." It's hard to be vulnerable, personal and accessible while still feeling that you're taking your work seriously. "Art speak" can sounds great to us, but loses it's impact easily.
If you're ready to be intentional about writing a creative statement that still has integrity, join us at the upcoming session.
