Hello Reader,
It's getting chilly in Baltimore. But I hope your holiday weekend was filled with the warmth of friends and loved ones.
Maybe you even had some time to catch up on your correspondence...
It's unfortunate: email gets a bad rap, especially for artists.
We feel a lot of pressure to focus on whatever social platform is currently en vogue. But here’s what no one tells you: those platforms own your audience and control your audience's engagement with you.
You’re renting space on their stage (and they're producing the show.)

Simple Email Rules are Creative Opportunities
Generally, there are no rules—except these few rules of etiquette to start with.

Email is different.
With email marketing, your list belongs to you. It’s a direct line to your audience—no algorithms, no middlemen. It’s your creative space to share ideas, stories, oro even behind-the-scenes looks at your studio or life.
That’s not to say email doesn’t have its rules of etiquette—
- Get consent: You need permission to email (and this two-way connection ultimately benefits you).
- Stay consistent: Your audience shouldn’t hear from you once a year and then forget who you are. Consistency builds trust (and a brand)
- Keep it clean: If people aren’t opening your emails, it’s time to remove them from your list. Quality > quantity.
These “simple email rules” aren’t just boundaries—they’re the foundation for creativity. And they’re why email is perfect for artists who want their work to connect, inspire, and sell.
Give the latest articles a read and let me know what you think. If you have any email wins (or fails) to share—I’d love to hear them.
And you want to explore these ideas with me and other creative professionals, join us for Marketing Monday on December 9th. You’ll get actionable advice, and we’ll figure out how email fits your art business.
Keep going,
Scott
