Gallery Pitches and Parenting Lessons

Good morning Reader,

A while back, someone asked why I wanted to become a parent.

I said, “I want to develop a mind.”

I used to think parenting meant shaping someone from the outside. But what I’ve seen up close is something else entirely.

Kids can shape themselves from the inside out. Even without words, they get exactly what they need without knowing how to ask for it.

This made me stop and reflect on "pitching."

From Canvas to Product: An Artist’s Journey into Merchandising

Here are a few insights from my experience:

  • A clear vision attracts support.
When people know where you're headed, they can help you get there.
  • The “why you” matters.
A good pitch doesn’t just present the work—it makes the case that you are the one to carry it forward.
  • A pitch needs an ask.
Too many artists assume others will “get it.” But a specific ask gives people something to say yes to.
  • There’s always a reward.
Whether it’s visibility, impact, connection, or just joy—supporters want to know what they’re investing in.
  • Business language is just a tool.
We can borrow language from other fields without losing our values. It helps give shape to things we already believe.

If you're thinking it might be time to revisit how you pitch your work and what to for—we’re tackling this topic on Monday.

Hitting a wall is not failure. It means you’ve grown enough to need a new container.

Keep going,
Scott
